Genesis of the word "windfall" and why its rare to find a piece of early Am. furniture with a board wider than 32": During the Colonial era, Britain made it illegal to cut down any tree with a trunk larger than 32" (such wood was reserved for the British navy). However, if the wind knocked it down, then the colonists could use it. needless to say, winds were pretty strong in New England prior to the Revolution and the resulting downed trees were termed a "windfall".
